Best Project at SMME Open House 2024

I am happy to share that our project titled "4-DOF Robotic Arm for Industrial Automation" has been declared the best project at the SMME Open House 2024.

The team consists of Muhammad Haris, Hamza Hussain, Osama Jarrar, and Muhammad Saad bin Asif. And the project was jointly supervised by Dr. Yasar Ayaz and yours truly.

In this project, my students desiged and developed  a 4-DOF serial robotic arm that can pick and place payloads upto 1kg. The key features of this robot are its low weight, high speed and high precision. This is achieved through the use of lightweight high-performance materials like carbon fiber and aluminum to keep the inertia low, which in turn makes the robot's motion faster and more precise. The arm is designed to perform pick and place operation using suction mechanism.

I was really happy and pleased to see that the students showed a lot of interest in carrying out such a challenging and multidisciplinary project that involved a myriad of disciplines including design of machines, mechanics of materials, manufacturing processes, materials science, robotics, and control systems. The project was self-financed and all the manufacturing was carried out in-house at SMME, NUST which gives me a lot of confidence about the quality of the manufacturing facilities we have here at NUST.

I am very proud of what my students have achieved during this project and I wish them all the best for their careers ahead. Well done boys!
