When they do a shameful act, they say, “We have found our fathers doing
it, and Allah has ordered us to do so.” Say, “Allah never orders
anything shameful. Do you say about Allah what you do not know?” (28)
Say, “My Lord has ordered me to do justice”, and set your faces straight
(towards Him) on each occasion of prostration, and pray to Him with
pure faith in Him. Just as He has created you in the beginning, so you
will be raised again. (29) He has led a group to guidance; and
established for another group is misguidance. Indeed, they have taken
the devils for their friends (awliya), instead of Allah, and they think
that they are on the right path. (30)
(Surah Al-Araaf, Chapter 7, Verse 28-30)
These ayahs clearly mark the difference between traditions and the pure teachings of Islam. If a tradition involves anything that goes against the teachings of Islam e.g. shirk, nudity, mixing of men and women, singing, dancing etc. then we should realize immediately that this cannot be from Allah and His Prophet (S.A.W.).
Allah Almighty commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to make it clear to them that such inventions are false and that their claims to have God’s endorsement are insupportable. Allah Almighty never orders anything immoral, oppressive or unjust. He only orders what is modest, just and beneficial.
Allah Almighty describes some of the salient features of Islam. Islam is the name of truth, justice and balance. A Muslim only worships Allah and he only asks Allah for help and salvation. He does not include anyone else in His worship even by the slightest symbolism.
When people make their worship exclusively to Allah and they are not involved in any Shirk, when they are truthful, just and balanced in all their matters and they keep asking Allah for guidance and knowledge then Allah Almighty will guide these people and they will become the friends (awliya) of Allah.
Whereas the people who keep on following their culture and traditions even if they are against the teachings of Islam, such people will plunge deeper and deeper into misguidance. When someone deviates from the straight path and does not correct his mistake even when pointed out, then he will keep following this deviation. With the passage of time, the distance between his deviated path and the straight path will keep on getting bigger and bigger and bigger even though the original deviation was quite small. Then finally, a time will come when he will become a friend (wali) of the devils. His heart will be stamped and he will lose the ability to see, hear and understand the signs of Allah. At this stage, he will not be able recognize the straight path even if several clear evidences are presented to him. He may think that he is on the right path but actually he has been misled by Satan.
The history of this world started with two groups. First group was of Prophet Adam (peace by upon him) and Eve (peace be upon her) who were friends of Allah. While the other group was of devils who were friends of Satan. This was the classification then and this will be classification when we will be raised again on the Day of Judgment. Either we will be in the group of friends of Allah or we will end up in the group of friends of Satan.
May Allah Almighty give us the ability to understand the truth and courage to follow the straight path. May Allah Almighty protect us from the influence of devils and may He enable us to follow his Deen in its purest form free from all deviations.
