Jummah Khutbah

.
My dear brothers, Assalam u Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu!
.
.
Islam is a religion of peace and justice . That is why Islam is against all forms of oppression. Opposing oppression and supporting justice is a fundamental concept of Islam. Allah Almighty asks us to stand up for justice even if this means opposing our own family, friends or country.
O you who believe! Stand up firmly for justice as witnesses for Allah, even if it is against your own selves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests. So do not let your desires cause you to deviate ˹from justice˺. If you distort the testimony or refuse to give it, then ˹know that˺ Allah is certainly All-Aware of what you do. (Quran 4:135)
.
Allah Almighty has ordered the Muslims to stand up for justice even if that means going against our own self interests, even if that means going against our own family, our own friends, our fellow countrymen and the other followers of our religion. One of the most important qualities of a Muslim society is that it is based on justice. It is a society where the rich or the poor are treated equally in the court and they can present their case without any fear. Allah Almighty has warned those people who avoid giving testimony when they are witnesses of a crime or any oppression. On the other hand Allah Almighty has promised punishment for those who give false testimonies and has even warned those who are vague in their testimonies.

But nowadays we are too afraid to speak up for justice if it goes against ourselves, our friends, our family or our country. We choose silence over speaking the truth and that shows the weakness of our faith.

When a Muslim’s heart is filled with Iman (faith), it will also be filled with compassion and sympathy for other Muslims. He will then be touched by their pain and suffering and feel sadness for them. This feeling stems from the belief stated in a Qur’anic verse that says:
In a hadith narrated by both Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (may Allah be pleased with them), the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
."The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever". (Sahih Bukhari: 78/42, Sahih Muslim: 45/84, Riyad uss Saliheen: 1/224)

.
That is why when Muslims are being oppressed and persecuted anywhere in the world, we should feel its pain and we should become worried for them. When Muslims in Palestine are being persecuted, we should feel that pain. When there are attacks on the Muslims in Afghanistan, we should feel that pain. When bombs are being dropped on the Muslims in Iraq and Syria, we should feel that pain. When Muslims in Yemen run out of food and start dying of hunger, we should feel that pain. When there is a genocide of Muslims in Myanmar and they are forced to flee from their own country, we should feel that pain. When Muslims in Xinjiang (China) are put in concentration camps and are forced to leave their religion, we should feel their pain. And when the Kashmiris are put under house arrest, curfew and siege, we should feel that pain too. Why are these Muslims being persecuted? What is their fault??

They punished them for nothing but that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, the Worthy of All Praise (Quran 85:8)
.
The people who are persecuting the Muslims will be punished very severely by Allah Almighty as He describes in the Quran:

.
.
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire. (Quran 85:10)
.
.Do not ever think that Allah is unaware of the atrocities perpetrated by the Oppressors; He merely gives them a reprieve (from punishment) until a Day when their eyes will stare in horror; And (they will be) running confusedly to and fro (as in a state of humiliation and defeat), their heads raised up (in supplication), unable to look away from the horror they shall see, and their hearts will be empty (from thinking because of their extreme fear). (Quran 14:42-43)
.
The people who are persecuting Muslims will get a very severe punishment from Allah. Now the question for us here is what can we do to improve the situation and restore peace in the world. Well everyone has his role to play according to his authority and resources.
.The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it,(even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith. (Nawawi: 34, Sahih Muslim: 1/84)
.
Based on this hadith, when a Muslim sees oppression and injustice, he has three options:
(a) He can use his hands and physically doing something about it
(b) He can use his tongue and speak out against it
(c) He can remain silent and resent it in his heart. This is the least level of faith.
.
So this means that if we see injustice and oppression somewhere and we don't even resent it in our hearts then we do not have any faith at all. This is a big warning for us and we should all examine our hearts that what is our reaction when we see oppression and persecution: do we want to change in with our hands, or do we want to change it with our mouth, do we resent it in our hearts? or do we not even resent it and have accepted it and are at ease with it?
.

I am sure that all of you are aware of what is happening in Kashmir since 5th August. India has abolished the article 370 and 35A of its constitution that had granted a special status of autonomy to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This means that according to India, Kashmir is not a disputed region anymore and they do not consider it any different from the other regions of India. This decision has violated several UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.

After this decision, India sent more than 35,000 additional Indian troops to Kashmir adding to the 600,000 troops already stationed there. The total population of Kashmir is about 8 million. So basically India has deployed a soldier for every 13 Kashimiri civilians.

.
Hundreds of pro-freedom leaders and workers have been detained and have been sent to far off prisons in mainland India. The whole valley is in a state of lockdown. A strict curfew has been imposed and people are not allowed to leave their homes. India has closed down all media in Kashmir. Journalists are not allowed to go there. All communication channels including cell phone services and internet have been shut down. There is no way for the rest of the world to communicate with the Kashmiris The Indian government has evacuated all tourists and Hindus from Kashmir. India has refused the United Nations’ request to investigate the matter. Kashmir has been virtually turned into the biggest prison in the world. Since 1989, around 96,000 Kashmiris have been killed. People are fearing a genocide. And the Kashmiri Muslim leadersare appealing to the world for help.
.
But yet the international reaction on these atrocities is nowhere to be found. There is still no pressure on the Indian government to lift the siege and return the situation back to normal. 8 million Kashmiris are under siege for 50 days, but still there is no reaction, no pressure. Imagine if 8 million Europeans were put under siege for 50 days like this, or if 8 million Jews were put under siege, or if 8 million Americans were put under siege. Forget 8 million, even if 8 Americans were put under siege like that, would the reaction have been the same? "

.
This is a humanitarian crisis. Plain and simple.
.
.
We cannot physically do anything to stop the injustice meted out to our brothers and sisters in Kashmir, but we can use our tongues and our hearts. I appeal to you all to make special dua for them. I ask you all to pray for our brothers and sisters in Kashmir. Ask Allah to protect them and to save the women from being raped and humiliated. Ameen
.
May Allah help our brothers and sisters in Kashmir, in Palestine, in Afghanistan, in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, China, Myanmar and all other places where Muslims are being oppressed and persecuted. Ameen.
.
Before closing this khutbah, I have a couple of announcements to make.
First, as you know, every Thursday night, we perform the cleaning of the Masjid to prepare it for the Jummah prayer. Everyone is welcome to join us in the cleaning. To keep this matter organized, we assign the task of cleaning Masjid on weekly basis to each Muslim community in Sendai. Next Thursday, it is the turn of the Malaysian community to perform the cleaning. So I am making a special request to all Malaysian brothers and sisters in particular and other Muslims in general to please be here next Thursday night and perform the cleaning together. May Allah reward you for this noble effort. Ameen
.
Secondly, I want you to know that this Masjid does not get funding from any organization. We have to generate our own funds. We need those funds to make sure that we can pay all the bills here including electricity, gas, water and internet etc. We also need to make sure that all the supplies are in order and we do not run out of any necessary supplies to keep this Masjid running continuously. For this purpose, we collect a fee of 1000 yen from every Muslim so that everyone can be included in this noble cause and get his/her reward from Allah Almighty. I request all of you to submit 1000 yen every month regularly to your country representative or you can also just drop the money in the white box just beside the door of this prayer hall.
.
Thirdly, our Imam, brother Zulfiqar is recovering well Alhumdulillah but he is still in the hospital. I request you all to keep praying for our beloved brother that may Allah grant him with a swift and full recovery back to health. Ameen.
